From the African Women in Cinema Archives

Zimbabwean filmmaker Prudence Francisca Uriri, a former freedom fighter of the Zimbabwean Liberation War, has produced several works and has been active in many aspects of film and video production, as editor for the Zimbabwe television, a board member of Capricorn Video Unit and founder of the production company, Eye for Africa.

She currently lives in Norway where she also lectures at the University of Tromsø. Her most current work, The Storm (2010), focuses on Zimbabweans forced into exile to South Africa because of poverty and political violence.

During an interview in 1997, I asked Prudence if she felt that she had a sensibility as a woman that she brings to your work. She replied:

I really do think so, maybe that is also one of my motivations for going into information work, coming from a background where the woman's role was not recognized by society. Women have always been taken for granted and it is felt that what they do does not have to be acknowledged. I feel that it does have to be acknowledged and I have to play a part in making my own society realize that women contribute a lot to the development of the society. Not only now have women made contributions, but since time immemorial, they have always played a role. READ COMPLETE INTERVIEW

Synosis:

The Storm is about Zimbabwean exiles who have been forced to flee their homeland because of economic hardship and political violence.

It follows the lives of several characters struggling to survive in the shadows and on the edges of South African society.

The film gives voice to their fears, hopes and dreams and ultimately reveals whether they will be able to return home to Zimbabwe to rebuild their lives and their shattered country.
